La Cueca

the woman dances alone
like a seabird crying
against the storming sea
white signal star
shining on the blue
she is calling, calling
she is calling against the wind

she watches the horizon
waiting for ships that founder in the storm
before the sun rises red
before the ocean turns to blood
bright signal star
bring the sailors home

¿donde estan?
her seabird call floats across the blue
and drums on the silence
of deaf black and white

A/N: I’ve been trying to get this poem out since my Chile trip and it refers to a really really specific experience that was kind of an emotional moment for me at the Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos.
